Our mission.
The mission of our media center is to help all Athens High School students develop college-ready research skills, a lifelong love of reading, and an ability to use technology to enhance class assignments and projects.
How to we develop college-ready research skills?
*We have adopted a school-wide research philosophy
*Students receive an assignment-specific research overview for the majority of school research projects
*All 9th graders will complete a high school research workshop. The skills are applied in English, health, and history courses.
*10th grade English students write an intensive research paper during the second semester
*11th and 12th grade students use literary criticism in a literary analysis essay
*12th grade English classes complete research projects about issues around the world
*U.S. and World History students use databases and e-books to complete research projects
How do we develop a lifelong love of reading?
*Students in all levels of English courses participate in reading experiences in which they are able to choose their own novels
*We offer a reading program called Battle of the Books, which exposes students to new reading material in a variety of genres
*Various literary genres are displayed in the media center so students diversify their reading interests
*Students listen to book talks and watch book trailers to allow for engagement in book selection
How do we foster an ability to use technology to enhance student work?
*Students are able to use iPads, SMART TV's, video cameras, digital cameras, video editing software, and more to complete assignments
*A computer technician is available to troubleshoot and teach students about the use of the technology
*Students receive an overview of how the technology functions before they are required to use it
*Staff members receive technology training, allows students to experience a wide range of technological advances
*Students have access to an e-mail account and access to Microsoft 365 to collaborate & complete assignments
